International Sustainable Development in the Oil and Gas Industry

In this course, students will undertake a detailed examination of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their relevance, reporting, risks, opportunities and management as they apply to the oil and gas industry (including planning, exploration, development, post-development) in Latin America.
  • Ensure that students are able to understand the development, purpose and application of sustainable development to business and society in their respective countries.
  • This course will examine the range and critical components of each of the SDGs that make up this global agenda, drawing upon case studies, reports, multi-media materials and experiences from international agencies, countries, cities, governments, non-government organizations, companies and civil society. It will place particular attention to the SDGs as they apply to Latin American countries and the interests, needs and expectations of the oil and gas sector.
  1. Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2015. This significant, ambitious and challenging global agenda for development has become the foundation for actions on sustainability over the next ten years or so.
  2. The majority of countries in the world have developed and implemented various action plans framed around 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their associated targets around the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.
  3. Successful actions and outcomes will fundamentally depend upon collaboration amongst all stakeholders, whether they are in governments, business or civil society, working at local, regional, national and international levels
  4. Engineers, scientists, planners and other business or public service professionals working or interested in working in energy resources management and sustainable development.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

This 30-hour course will emphasize the practical applications of skills, techniques and learnings as they apply to sustainable development with particular reference to energy needs and the oil and gas industry in Latin American countries. It will be taught through a combination of presentations, multimedia activities, group discussions, simulations, exercises and directed reading/research.

Students will be expected to prepare for elements of the course through directed research activities and to present orally/share their professional experiences and opinions around sustainable development issues, risks and opportunities.

PRE-REQUISITES

Experience or interest in working in the hydrocarbon/energy/mining or related industry or in government and non-governmental organizations related to these fields.
